Joint Account Surprise

An ex-girlfriend of my fiance has a checking account that my fiance opened. She was told to close the account after moving. She neglected to close it, but he thought she did. He got his own personal account. What rights does he have to close this account, since he receives the statement and is in the process of closing all of his accounts in that bank?
