Liability to Joint Owner

My elderly father wants to add me to his checking account. Is there any liability to me, as long as I don't deposit funds?

As an owner on the account, you would have access to all the funds on deposit, as well as the full obligation to pay any fees and overdrafts. Also, anyone seeking legal actions such as a levy or garnishment against you or your father, could reach this account. There is little weight placed on who deposited what funds.
