Bank Holds Funds After Check Clears: Why?

Why would they hold a payroll check for fifteen days? It is a new account, the payroll check cleared within three days, and the bank had my money. I wasn't aware of this, and I lost all on overdraft fees and more. Can you enlighten me as to how I can get back some or all of my paycheck?

When you opened your account, the bank should have disclosed its policy regarding availability of funds deposited by check during the new account period (first thirty days). There is a lot of information handed out during the new account process. The matter of when you can access funds deposited by check is important enough that you probably ought to have asked about it if it was not actually mentioned by the bank representative.

You do have the option of explaining the problem to a bank representative and asking whether some part of the fees you've been hit with might be reversed. Misunderstandings occur, and bankers can be flexible. Of course, there are no guarantees, but you won't know if you don't ask.
