I recently got divorced and moved to another state. I have a joint account at the bank with my now ex-husband. There is no local branch within fifty miles of me. When I called the bank to have them remove my name from the joint account, they told me I could only do this by going to a branch, since I am the main account holder. This is ridiculous! There has to be some other way to do this. I don't have transportation to drive four hours to the nearest branch. What can I do so that I am no longer responsible for what my ex-husband does with the account? He recently wrote a check with insufficient funds, resulting in an overdraftfee and a negative balance of -$85.89. I don't want to be held responsible for such occurrences.

Contact the bank again and ask that they close the account, sending a check for the balance to you (or your ex-husband, if you prefer), and notify your ex that you are doing so. It seems strange that the bank would not suggest such a method, given the fact that there are no offices in your area.
