Need Copy of Old Check for Tax Dispute

Cook County states that I might have overpaid my property tax in 2005-2006. I paid with two checks. I have all the information for one check, and the date and amount for the other, both in the same year with odd amounts. I'm getting the run-around from the bank. How can I go about getting a copy of my check to send to the state?

If you don't have a copy and cannot retrieve one online, you'll need to ask the bank. They should have a copy in retention. You may be charged for the time it takes them to look it up and to copy it. That could take hours, depending on if it is paper or filed electronically as an image.

Some states allow the fees for this and some states require that customers be provided some or all their check copies free. Ask your bank about the fee in advance and if you ever received a copy in the past. Some accounts do not return checks or images unless requested. You are at the bank's mercy on this one.
