The courts placed a hold on my checking account. Will this prevent me from opening another checking account at at different bank?
It depends on the hold. We assume you mean they froze your deposits. This may be done bacause of a court case that was lost and the party suing is now trying to recover funds, or past due taxes, child support, etc.
The current freeze is not something of which other banks would be aware. They may be aware that checks you wrote are being returned because of the held funds. If that isn't an issue, you can open another account. Be aware though, that account may be frozen by the court or other party as well.
Try to resolve this problem. If you don't, you may be afraid to open an account for years to come.
