Administratrix Trying to Cash Checks

I have been appointed the administratrix to my father's estate (it took a year) and am also his only heir. I have checks made out to "the estate of ...", but my bank won't touch them even with my court appointment papers. How do I get the ability to cash checks made out to him or his estate? Thanks for any help. This is such a frustrating process.

It can be bothersome to get a check cashed, particularly a check payable to an estate. Most financial institutions require that checks payable to an estate be deposited, rather than cashed. Talk to a couple of bankers in your area, and I think you'll find this is the case.

If it is, you'll need to open an account (providing the bank with documentation of your appointment as administratrix), deposit the checks, and then issue checks or make withdrawals to disburse the funds. Having bank account statements will probably be of help to you when you make your accounting of the estate to the probate court.
