How long does it generally take for a deposit to become available? Do all banks have similar waiting periods?
Banks following Regulation CC have restrictions on the maximum time under which they can hold funds. Generally, funds are made available after a 2, 5, 7, 9 or 11 business day period. The differences involve the distance between your bank and the bank the check is drawn on, the type of check it is (personal, government, etc.) and how new your checking account is with your bank.
When your bank places a hold on a check you deposit, they will give you a notice explaining why, and when the funds will be made available. They will give you that notice when you make the deposit or will mail it to you the next business day.
Just because funds are made available based on this schedule, that doesn't mean the check you deposited is good. It means the time generally allowed for the check to process has passed. A check could still be returned for a variety of reasons, including nonsufficient funds.
