The bank entered one of my deposits as $6.00 when it should have been $600.00. It is eight months later and I just realized that they made a mistake. Do they have to give me my money back and refund my NSFfees? If so, how do I go about getting them to reimburse me?
A lot depends on what was in your deposit. If it was cash, you may have a hard time backing up your claim. If it was a check that you received from someone else, the check was probably encoded incorrectly for $6.00, too. The person who gave you the check may or may not be willing to cooperate by providing a copy of the check. If it was a check that you wrote on another account, you should be able to present adequate evidence to back up your claim. If your bank concedes that it erred, it should be willing to adjust your account.
A queston must be asked here: why did you wait for eight months to check your account? You have a responsibility when you have a checking account to examine your account statement promptly. Most checking account problems result from customer inattention. Had you reviewed your bank statement each month, you would probably have avoided the overdrafts, and getting the bank to investigate the error and correct it would have been a lot easier.
