Cashing a Minor's Checks

My son received several checks for his Bar Mitzvah. I'd like him to experience going to the bank to cash a couple of them and put the rest in the savings account he has there. Can he cash them with his school ID card?

What a great idea! Since you your son already has an account at the bank, why not give them a call before you go just to make sure there won't be any policy issues. They might ask that the checks all be deposited and that a withdrawal be taken for the cash you want him to have, but if you call ahead, you won't be surprised. Kids need to be able to cash gift checks, and it's good for the person who gives them to see the child's signature on the back.
