I'm closing a checking account in one bank and need to give them a check from my new bank in order to cover my last expenses. Do I make that check out to "Cash" and then endorse the back? I know I use "cash" for a check to my own bank to get money, but is this correct in this case, or do I need to write the check as payable to the old bank's name?
This is a question that can only be answered by the bank you are paying. If your old account is still open with a negative balance, you might make the check payable to "XYZ Bank, for account no. 12345678" or "XYZ Bank, for account of (your name)." That should make it safe to mail the check, along with a deposit ticket to the old account.
If your old account was closed with a negative balance, your former bank will probably ask you to make the check payable to the bank. If you're taking the check to the bank in person and depositing it to your old account, probably the best way to draw the check is to make it payable to yourself, then endorse the check when you arrive at the bank. In any event, to make sure you handle it in the best way, call the bank and ask.
