I recently had $455 taken from my account without my knowing about it. I asked my bank and they said that I was being charged for a check that they cashed for more than the amount on the check, but I never received more money than what the check was worth. What can I do? How do I get my money back?
Speak with a supervisor at the bank and have him show you exactly where the over-payment happened. Banks have wonderful paper trails that account for every dollar in and out of a person's account and the tellers' drawers. If they debited your account, they obviously believe they are correct in doing so. They'll be happy to show you their records and or video tapes that support their position. If after this meeting you are still not satisfied with the answer, you can contact the bank's regulator (they can tell you who their regulator is and how you can contact the regulator,) the local Better Business Bureau or an attorney.
