The store where I buy my pipe tobacco insists that my DOB be on the check. Is this legal?
Look for another supplier. The store has every right to set whatever rules it wants to for accepting checks as payment, as long as they don't conflict with the law.
Putting any personal identification information, particularly date of birth or social security number, in the preprinted information on checks is a really bad idea. Some people have even started to put initials and last name on their checks rather than spell out their full names. That practice has run into objections from some retailers, however.
It's quite common for a merchant taking a check to note identification information from a driver's license or other ID source, including DOB, ID number, etc. That is legitimate, and you can only object by paying another way or taking your business elsewhere.
