Endorsement Question on Depositing a Check

Can a check be deposited without the account owner's signature on it?

Yes. There is a provision in the Uniform Commercial Code, as adopted in all but two states (NY and SC) that permits a check to be deposited without the payee's endorsement.

However, individual banks may have policies that require an endorsement when they accept a check for deposit. In such a case, the bank's rule would take precedence.
