How long does a bank have to return a forged check before it becomes the bank's responsibility?
If by "forged check" you mean that the check itself is bogus or the drawer's signature (front of check) is forged, the bank that the check is drawn on has only one business day to return it. For example, if the check reaches that bank for payment on Monday, the bank must start it on its way back by midnight Tuesday. If, however, you refer to a forged endorsement (back of check), a claim can be made against prior holders of the check for up to three years.
