My bank has sent back a lot of checks claiming irregular signature, even when they were told it was the right signature. Is it their responsibility to now track these checks and make them good and cover the charges incurred?
Its hard to assign responsibility, presuming that the signatures in question were different enough from the signature on the bank's records to say that the bank made an honest mistake. Sometimes customers' signatures change -- an injury or illness, maturity or disability, or simply being rushed, can all affect how we sign our names.
The bank should be able to help you straighten things out. They can help determine which checks were returned, and can even confirm with the payees that the returns were made in error. The bank might also offer to refund some of the fees involved. Whether the bank is obligated to do any of these things is something that cannot be answered, because it is not known at this point, whether the bank's error was wrongful or excusable based on the signature discrepancies.
