Jackpot Owner Jailed Before Check Cashed

My son won a $10,000 jackpot at a local casino. He is now incarcerated. The check for the jackpot was lost. The casino issued another check to him and mailed it to me. I have a legal power of attorney for him, but I am unable to cash the check or deposit it into my account and cannot open an account for him, as he has to do it in person. What are my options?

Keep looking for a financial institution that will work with you to get an account open for your son. Certainly this will not be easy. Many banks are reluctant to deal with individuals in prison or with accounts not opened in person, but some institutions will open accounts for absentee account owners, if they are able to verify the owners' identification and, in your case, the legitimacy of a power of attorney.
