Getting New Checking Account after Prior Troubles

My husband has had a checking account with the same bank for the past seven years and wants to add me to it. I have had some trouble with checking accounts in the past. Would it be possible for him to do this? Do banks do credit checks or simply input the name?

Some banks do verify credit before they open a deposit account. Fewer would do this when adding a person. Remember that your husband will be liable for whatever happens on this joint account, so you are not a single risk. He already has a reputation established.

The only real reason I could see an issue would be if you still owed money on an old account and it was to this same bank. In that case they could see your ownership in the old account and the new one, and use new funds to pay the old debt. If this is a possibility, contact them about the old debt and offer to make payments or a lump sum payment. They may even accept less than a full amount owed as settlement.
