Cashing Check without Bank Account

I currently do not have a bank account and have received a personal check from a friend. Can I go to a branch of the bank listed on the check and cash it?

Yes. You should take adequate picture identification with you and you may want to call them first to ensure there won't be any problems and to ask about any requirements they may have.

You could also take the check to a check cashing company. Although there you are likely to pay a high fee. You may also want to use this opportunity to establish your own bank account at an institution close to you, which has a fee schedule you can accept. Many banks offer accounts with low minimum balances and no fees.
