Eliminating Overdraft Charges

When I check my bank account online, it shows my available funds after I make a deposit. However, when I make purchases they are posted in front of my deposits and have ultimately caused me to overdraft. Is there any way I can prevent my bank from doing this and negate these overdraft charges?

The law allows banks to post items on a given day in any order. It also allows banks to delay your access to any funds you deposit until at least the next business day. When checks are deposited, it's possible that your access will be delayed further.

Clarify with your bank how you should interpret the balances reflected on their online banking system. You can certainly ask the bank to rebate some overdraft charges because of the misunderstanding this point, but once you have the bank's explanation of the balances showing on their online banking service, you will realize that "what you see is not always what you get."
