Setting Up Joint Account

I can't have a checking account for four more years because of a mistake I made earlier in life. My husband and I got married after I made this mistake, and he wants me to have access to his checking account and have my checks added to it by direct deposit. Is there any way we can set this up given my history?

If you want to have payroll credited to the account using direct deposit, you'll have to be a joint account owner. You and your husband will have to ask the bank that holds that account if it will add you as a joint owner. The bank may agree to do so routinely, or it may require that your checking account record be researched before agreeing to make the change.

If the bank isn't willing to accept you as a joint owner of the checking account, you should ask whether it would accept you as a joint savings account holder. If that gets approved, you could have your paychecks directly deposited there, and then move funds into the checking account. Transfers from savings are limited, so don't do it more often then once a week to be on the safe side. If that arrangement works out for the bank, it may be willing to accept you as a joint checking account owner after a while. If the current bank refuses the requests, you can inquire of other banks in your area to see if any will accept you.
