Can Bank Remove Funds Held for Another?

I deposited my friend's payroll check into my account for him. His account at the same bank is overdrawn. Can the bank take the money that I deposited into my account to cover for what he is overdrawn?

No. Because your friend apparently isn't a joint owner of your account, the bank can't take funds to cover his overdraft. Don't make a habit of accommodating your friend this way. He owes the bank for his overdrawn account, and if the bank catches on to what you're doing to help him avoid settling his obligation, it could decide not to do business with you any longer.
