Removing Name from Joint Account

My husband and I just separated and he has overdrawn our joint account. Is there a way that I can remove myself from the account?

It's unlikely that the bank will allow you to remove yourself from the account while it is overdrawn. That's because you are as liable as your husband for the overdraft.

You can contact the bank and make arrangements to bring the balance to zero, and then close the account. That would be the best way for you to prevent your husband from overdrawing the account further, or running up overdraft fees. It's always troubling when one joint account owner acts to the detriment of the other. Contact the bank as soon as possible to prevent the problem from getting worse.
