I'd like to reopen a jointchecking accoun that I used to have with my late husband, so I can use up the checks I still have. My bank won't let me do that. Why?
Its understanable that you do not to waste the checks you already have. However, once a checking account has closed out on a bank's computer systems, most banks require that a new account be established, rather than attempting to re-open an old one. This provides the bank with certain important controls, including the ability to prevent someone from impersonating a former depositor. In many cases, the bank's systems simply won't allow closed accounts to be reestablished. If you don't have a heavy-duty shredder at home, we suggest you ask the bank to shred those old checks to prevent them from getting into the wrong hands.
