We sold a car to someone. We cashed the check at our bank. The next day, the person who wrote us the check, stopped payment on the check.
How long does it take for our bank to get the check to their bank, or is this instantaneous? How quickly can this person's bank stop the payment of this check?
The time for a check to be delivered to the paying bank varies, usually with the distance between the paying bank and the bank that accepts the check for deposit. It can be a single day, or it can be several.
The drawer of a check has a right to stop payment on it unless the check has been certified or finally paid by the bank it's drawn on. That doesn't get the drawer of the check "off the hook" on the deal that resulted in the check. In other words, unless the car has been returned to you (or never left), the drawer still owes you for the car.
