Is there a way to get a cashier's check without having a bank account? I just agreed to buy a car and they want payment in either cashier's check or certified check.

A lot of banks have policies against the sale of their cashier's checks to non-customers. However, you may be able to locate one that can accommodate you. If you locate a bank that is receptive to the transaction, be prepared to pay a fee for the check. Ask about the fee when you first contact the bank.
Because you will undoubtedly have to pay for the cashier's check with cash, you will be asked for certain personal information if the transaction is $3,000 or more. For example, the bank will ask for your full name, residence address, social security number, date of birth, and ask for an acceptable piece of identification. Be prepared to provide that information and verify it with your ID, preferably a state driver's license or the equivalent, or the bank won't be able to sell you the check.
