Recovering Money from Old Cashier's Check

My father died in 1996 and my mother just found in some of his documents, a cashier's check for $1000 he had made out to an individual back in 1979, but never sent to him. Is there a way to recoup that money?

That will be a challenge, if it can be done at all. You can start by contacting the bank that issued the check, or its successor if it's been bought or merged. It's likely that the bank won't still have records of a check that old.

Uncashed cashier's checks are subject to states' unclaimed property laws, so it's likely that the issuing bank surrendered that $1,000 to a state treasury by now. You can contact the abandoned property division of the state in which the bank is/was located to look for the money. That office will also tell you whether its regulations allow for recovery of such a sum by relatives of the remitter of a cashier's check.
