Maximum Length of Hold on a Check

How long can a bank can keep a cheque on hold?

In the U.S., if the check is deposited to a checking account, a hold could be placed for up to eleven business days, depending on the location of the paying bank and the depositary bank. If the deposit account is less than thirty days old, or if the check is deposited to a savings account, or drawn on a bank outside the U.S., there is no federal limit on the length of such a hold.

If you are inquiring about rules outside of the U.S., we don't have information on how long such holds may be outside of the U.S.
