In the U.S., if the check is deposited to a checking account, a hold could be placed for up to eleven business days, depending on the location of the paying bank and the depositary bank. If the deposit account is less than thirty days old, or if the check is deposited to a savings account, or drawn on a bank outside the U.S., there is no federal limit on the length of such a hold.
