Reclaiming an Unused Certified Check

I issued a certified check for a down payment on a house, but they didn't take my offer. I wrote VOID on the front, thinking that was the correct thing to do, but when I took the check back into my bank they said they didn't think there was anything they could do with it now that I did that. How can I get my money back? What options does the bank have to process a transaction to refund me.

Take the check back to the bank and try again. It may be that the individual you spoke to earlier didn't know how to proceed, and therefore threw up a roadblock. The teller should have referred the question to someone with more knowledge.

If you didn't deliver the check to the intended payee, the only parties with an interest in the certified check are you and the bank. If you explain the situation to someone with a little more experience sorting out little problems like this, you may have to escalate it to a supervisor or manager, you'll probably get a good result. The bank should be willing to take the check back as a deposit to your account, with a "Not used for purpose intended" endorsement.
