Cashing an Old Cashier's Check

I hold a cashier's check for over 175K, but I am past the 90 day void period. What can I do?

Contact the issuing bank to determine whether there will be any problem if the check is presented for payment after the 90-day period. There should not be a problem, but make the inquiry just to be on the safe side. Then, deposit it at your bank or take it to the issuing bank and ask to have all or part of it reissued, taking cash for the difference.

It's never a good idea to hold on to checks for long, even cashier's or certified checks. If the bank representatives tell you "Don't worry, that check will be good regardless of how long you hold it," don't be lulled into inaction. Banks get bought and sold, lose records over time, and checks can get lost or misplaced. If you forget about a check for a few years, the bank may be forced to surrender the funds to the state as abandoned property. Negotiating (cashing/depositing) them promptly is generally wise.
