I bought a cashier's check from my bank, made payable to the person to whom I was going to send it, then decided not to send it. How do I cash it or get the money back?
Your bank should have procedures for just such circumstances, because the question arises regularly for all banks that issue cashier's checks or their equivalents. Such procedures typically call for the check to be turned back to the issuing bank, and may require that you endorse it with something like "Not used for intended purpose" and your signature, but before you do anything, bring it to the bank and ask how to obtain the refund.
If you were given a duplicate of the check as a "purchaser's copy," bring it with you, and be prepared to provide identification if you are not known at the bank. Your request should be handled by the bank routinely.
