Why would a bank allow someone to change the payee on a check and then cash it? How can I trace the numbers on the back of the cashier's check to find exactly what bank allowed this?
It's possible that the bank didn't notice the alteration. That doesn't change the fact that the check should not have been paid in its altered state. The bank that issued the check should be able to trace where it was cashed, using the endorsements on the back.
