Overdraft Charges and Bouncing Checks

What is the maximum a bank can charge for NSF? Also, once the bank covers a check as paid, can they go back a couple weeks and return it as unpaid, even though it was cleared from the account?

There is no federal restriction on the dollar amount a bank can charge for overdrafts or checks drawn on insufficient funds. Any such limit would be a state law issue.

As for returning a check drawn on your account, the bank has one shot only, and it expires at midnight on the business day after the check is presented for payment. If the check arrives at the bank for payment on Monday, the bank only has until Tuesday midnight to return it, and in some cases, the bank has no ability to return the check unpaid at all.
