I received a check in the mail, forwarded from a previous address and it just got here. The date on the check is 3/25/09. The check says void after 60 days. Am I still able to deposit it?
Sometimes that sort of legend on a check is only a ploy to encourage prompt cashing or depositing of the check. Sometimes it means what it says. You don't want to guess wrong.
The best course of action is to contact the issuer to find out if the check can be deposited. If the answer is no, ask the issuer how to arrange for a replacement check. You'll probably have to send the first check back, and make sure you provide your current mailing address.
Even if the issuer admits the "void" statement is a bluff, you could have trouble depositing the check if your bank's teller reads the check carefully. In that case, be prepared to ask for a replacement in a second phone call, or simply avoid the hassle altogether and arrange for the replacement in spite of assurances that the issuer's bank will honor the first check.
