You can't cancel it, but you can make a claim with the issuing bank that it was lost, stolen or destroyed. The claim isn't effective until ninety days elapse from the date of the check. In that period, the bank will watch for the check and will have to pay it if it is presented by someone with the right to enforce it. It would have to have been properly endorsed and transferred, so the bank can't pay it if the endorsements aren't all in order.
If ninety days go by and the check isn't paid, the bank can refund your money. If it pays you earlier and has to pay the original check within that ninety day period, the bank can look to you for a return of its refund.
