If I bring my cashier's check to the same bank to cash it, do they have to cash it? The check is for over $40,000. I bank there as well and have an account. How long is a hold on this type of check, if it can't be cashed?
Even if you bring the cashier's check to the bank it's drawn on, it may be too large for the bank to cash. It may be able, for example, to provide $20,000 today and ask you to take another check for the balance, and make an appointment to cash it. This is because the bank may need to order extra cash.
If you decide to account it, the funds should be available for withdrawal on the next business day, because the check is drawn on the bank taking it for deposit and because it's a cashier's check. In other words, there would be no reason for the bank to hold funds.
