I got a cashier's check from my bank to send to my son. He is expected to be in the hospital for about a month and it is in his mailbox which I cannot access. I have my yellow copy of the cashier's check. How can it be cancelled so that I can get the money back?
You need to contact the bank which issued check. There is a waiting period, and then a bond has to be obtained. In general terms, a cashier's check can't be canceled. The bond is there to step in just in case it is. That check is currently waiting in a mailbox somewhere, so it can be cashed. Getting the bond may be more difficult.
Depending on the mailbox, the postman may return it as unclaimed mail if it isn't otherwise collected by your son or someone else. That could happen before you'd even be able to request a refund. If that happens, take the check to the bank. They can show it as not used for the purpose intended and refund your money.
