Have 20 Year Old Cashier's Check: What to do?

While cleaning out my parents' home, I found a cashier's check dated 1989, from my grandmother to my father for $2500.00. When I presented it to the bank (KeyBank, Syracuse, NY) where it originated, for deposit into the estate account, they would not honor it. They stated it was beyond their retention date. Do cashier's checks have an expiration date? How do I go about cashing this check? NYS Unclaimed funds show no records for my father or my grandmother.

It is possible that your parents lost that check and had the bank pay it as a lost item. There isn't a way to know.

If you are not happy with the bank's response, contact the bank's regulatory agency and place a complaint. We are not familiar with the record retention requirements of all states. You can find their regulator here.
