Difference Between Signing and Endorsing

What does "signed on the front" and "endorsed on the back" mean?

Those phrases refer to the fact that a check might be signed in two different places. The signature on the front of a check, if made by an individual authorized to sign on the account, provides the authorization for the bank named on the front of the check to pay funds from the account identified on the front.

The signature on the back of a check is usually referred to as an endorsement. It may be a handwritten signature or it could be applied with a stamp. The endorsement is used to transfer the ownership of the "order to pay" to a new holder.
