I am selling my auto to a stranger who wants to pay me with a cashier's check. After reading several stories on this site about counterfeit checks, I am leery as to how I should accept payment. Besides asking for cash, is there a safer way? Can we both go into my bank and request a transfer?
Cash is the best option. Being with the buyer at his bank when a cashier's check is purchased is safer and secure. You cuold have the funds wired into your account. If you do this with the buyer, at his bank, you will all but avoid the scam pitfalls you read about. Those are usually done vial email and long distance. If you are at the buyer's bank, you will know the cashier's check is from a valid bank and was properly purchased.
