I purchased a cashier's check for the amount of $206,569.96. The dollar amount and written amount are the same, but the check writer the bank uses put "THE SUM OF 206596 DOLS 96 CTS" on it. Which is the correct amount for which the check will clear?
You pose an excellent question. Usually, the dollar amount on a check is displayed once numerically and once in words, and when the two amounts differ, the amount in words controls as the valid amount of the check.
However, in this case it appears the amount is expressed three times. The third amount, embossed to discourage alteration of the check amount, is $27 high. If you haven't already negotiated the check or given it to the payee, we recommend you return to the bank to have a replacement check issued for the correct amount, only because the embossed amount might cause confusion. If that's not possible, plan that the correct (lower) amount will be honored and paid.
