Can I Make my own Memo Line?

I'd like to write a memo on a cashier's check that I just purchased at the bank to indicate what it is for, however there is no memo field. Can I hand write it in myself?

It's perfectly acceptable to annotate the front of the check with an order number or very brief description of the transaction as long as you avoid any of the printed information on the check. Make sure you hold on to the copy of the check that the bank may have given you, and put the same information on that copy that you write on the original check. If you did not receive a copy with the check, make a copy before you send or deliver the check, to make it easier to obtain the information if there are any problems with your payment.
