When you get the check, ensure it is during the business day and that you can call the issuing bank, assuming you can't go to the bank to cash it. Going to the bank, a public place, is always advisable in deals like this.
If you call the bank, describe your check to them. They can tell you the physical characteristics of valid items and may be able to tell you if it is genuine or at least if there are scams involving their checks. That is the best you can do.
