Identifying Numbers in the MICR Line

I recently came across checks drawn from the Bank of America that have four sets of numbers in the MICR line. I can identify the ABA number and the check number, but which is the account number, and what is the extra set of numbers?

Generally there are up to five fields of information at the bottom of your check.

  • The amount of the check
  • The number of the check
  • The account number on which the check is drawn
  • The American Bankers Association's routing number
  • Auxiliary number appearing only on commercial checks

The amount shows only after your bank encodes that. If you ever don't balance, verify that the checks were run for the correct amount for which you wrote them.
