Can Damaged Cashier's Check be Replaced?

I received a cashier's check for something I sold and inadvertently ripped it up. Is there anything the purchaser can do to replace the payment?

Since you had possession of the cashier's check, you can contact the seller to obtain information on it (serial number, bank name, dollar amount, etc.), then contact the issuing bank and ask for assistance in filing a claim under the Lost, Stolen or Destroyed Cashier's, Teller's or Certified check provision of the Uniform Commercial Code. Because you had received the check, you must file the claim.

You will need to provide an affidavit that you had possession of the check and that it was destroyed, and file a claim requesting that the bank pay you for it. The bank can wait until ninety days have elapsed from the date of the destroyed check before paying you. If you are able to provide the issuing bank with the pieces of the destroyed check, the bank may decide to re-issue a check right away.
