If you are asking about a cashier's check or teller's check (often labeled "official checks"), such checks have no expiration date. If one of these checks isn't cashed within two or three years, however, they may become subject to state abandoned property laws. That would require the issuing bank to try to contact the payee (often impossible) to encourage him or her to cash the check. If that is unsuccessful, the bank might have to turn the funds over to the state, making recovery a little more complicated, but still not impossible.
