Purchasing a Cashier's Check

Can I buy a cashier's check or official check with cash if I don't have a bank account?

If you've heard that some banks don't sell cashier's checks to non-customers, or that they don't sell them for cash, or both, that's true. A lot of banks have cut back on the availability of this service. Make some telephone calls to banks in your area to see if there is one that will accommodate you. If the dollar amount is relatively small -- under $1,000 or so -- you may be able to purchase a money order instead of a cashier's check, perhaps at a retail outlet that deals with non-customers.
