Avoiding Fees in Depositing Foreign Checks

Can I deposit a check that is made out in pounds into my American bank account without paying all of the fees?

Probably not. Checks drawn in other than U.S. dollars or on foreign banks (your check sounds like it fits both categories) can't be handled by U.S. banks in routine, automated fashion. They need special handling, and that generally means that fees are charged. You may be able to convince your U.S. bank to waive or reduce its fees for an isolated check, but if you need to move funds from outside the U.S. regularly, you might look into the relative costs of wire transfers.
