Boss is Trying to be Helpful

My husband recently died and his old boss wants to help me out by sending something similar to his paycheck until my insurance goes through. However, he sent the check in my husband's name. How do I deposit it?

Your bank will likely refuse to accept such a check for deposit, unless the deposit is to an estate account. Although your late husband's employer may want to help you out, checks in your husband's name can only be negotiated by an official representative of his estate, usually an administrator or executor.

If your husband's former boss wants you to have money while you wait for insurance proceeds, any checks he issues should be payable to you. That may require putting you on the company payroll for a while, which may or may not be possible.
