Do Old Paychecks Ever Die?

I have a payroll check that was issued to me on 9/7/01, that I never cashed. Can I cash it now?

Even if you are still entitled to the payment, don't try to cash that check. The bank it's drawn on may bounce it simply because it's more than six months old. There's a good chance that an account open in 2001 might be closed seven years later.

If you think you are still due the money and the company that issued the check is still around, contact them to see if they will swap the old check for a new one. Be prepared for them to argue about it though. With so much time elapsed, your former employer might feel that you should have already received a replacement by now.
